Syrinx 2.0 Released

After what seems like an eternity, Syrinx 2.0 has emerged from beta and is available to all.  It’s been out for a little over 24 hours now and the response has been great.  Lots of good feedback is going through the Twitter timeline.

Many thanks are due to the many people who beta tested 2.0 and sent in bugs and feedback.  This major release could not have been successful without all your help and support.

For this release I did something new: a Press Release via prmac.com.  I’m interested to see what impact that has on the amount of exposure Syrinx receives.  So far it seems like it has spread quite well.  Now if I can catch a review or two in some well read Mac websites we’ll be on our way.

Looking forward I think the new timeline architecture is really going to give me a strong base moving forward.  I have lots of ideas I would like to implement and users have sent me even more ideas.  I’m excited to see where Syrinx grows from here.  When I first published Syrinx it was one of only a few native Twitter clients available for the Mac.  Now we’re inundated with clients, each more polished than the last.  So far I think Syrinx’s unique feature set, especially Pause and Bookmark are really keeping it a little separated from the rest of the clients.

I’m also looking forward to exploring the iPhone development platform, and  I’d like to spend some time working on NameChanger.  Also, I’m headed to WWDC this year, it’ll be my first time.

It’s a busy summer ahead, but I look forward to it and producing some more great software.

I noticed that if I cmd-shift-L to open a hyperlinked “@twittername” it does not open that persons twitter page in a browser, but just clicking it does work.

I’d like to see a preference to send tweets only by Command-Return or by clicking a send button.

I just discovered Syrinx, and just had to say it: this is AWESOME! :D I actually jumped from a paid Tweetie to Syrinx on the second. :)

Just one thing: I hope you can add more filter options. I would VERY much like to filter on clients, so I can remove those RSS feeders. :)

@Mark Cmd-Shift-L will only open standard links, not usernames or hashtags.
@mibu – I’ll that idea to the list.
@Håvard – Glad to here you like it! Client filter is an interesting idea, I’ll add it to the list.

Just had another idea. How about a “duplicate” filter? Filter RT’s of tweets already in your stream (would be nice if it also matched previous RT’s) and possibly filter tweets containing links already in your stream.

    Hi Mickey,
Someone just uploaded a photo of your app on our site and compared it with Twhirl – kudos to you!

I could not find your email address to send this. Would you be interested in letting Syrinx users upload photos from your app by supporting the TweetPhoto API? Drop me a line when you are free. I have a great value proposition for you to integrate TweetPhoto!

Here is the photo of how I just discovered you: http://tweetphoto.com/19680dkl

Look forward to hearing from you!

    Best Regards,

    Sean Callahan

I like your app a lot but I really wish I could change the font size. It’s much too small for my elderly eyes to read.

Syrinx stopped receiving new tweets on Saturday, could this have something to do with the 32 bit tweet number being passed?

  9. June 14th, 2009 at 21:39 | #9

@Bondelev – Customizable font size is on my list of ToDos.
@Richard – Yeah, there was an issue with 2.0.1. Please upgrade to 2.0.2 by clicking Check for Updates under the Syrinx menu or downloading the newest version from the website.

I absolutely adore Syrinx; I’d love to see a blogspot blogger based on the same product. If I could shout you a six pack of beer – I would :-)

Is there anything like Syrinx for the Facebook feed? I find myself constantly getting lost in it and wishing for bookmarks!

I’m using the latest version. I added syrinx to my login page so it loads automatically when I login to OSX. However, Syrinx never automatically logs me into Twitter. I have to do it manually. I select the tick box to save my password. Anyone else experiencing this?

  13. April 29th, 2010 at 14:28 | #13

@Mike- This is most likely because Syrinx is getting loaded and trying to login before your network connection is available. Syrinx will only try to login once to make sure it doesn’t lockout users with invalid passwords. I will have to try coming up with a fix for this particular situation.

I tried to reply to this post, but the site timed out. So here goes.

Syrinx still fails to login even if I don’t start it automatically but manually start it after using my laptop for 30 minutes. If I hit refresh it does then login.

A quick question. Why does it take two clicks to open a link in a twitter post?

    @Mike

    I forgot to say it’s a 404 error I get.

@Mike That’s very odd behavior you are seeing. Hitting refresh will not log you in, so if that’s working it must be logging you in correctly, but apparently not refreshing your timeline. Does it give you any errors when you launch it?
The reason it takes two clicks is because an individual cell needs focus first, which is the first click. The second click then activates the link. I hope to improve this interaction in the future.

    Yes I get a 404 error.

“Failed to verify credentials due to a server error”

If I close the error dialog and hit refresh, the timeline is then populated.

I assume the recent 2.4 release doesn’t address my problem?

  20. May 28th, 2010 at 23:06 | #20

@Mike 2.4 uses a completely different authentication system (xAuth, an extension of oAuth), as Twitter is turning off the basic system starting in June. If you are still seeing the same issue it seems like it might be something related to your system or your network setup.

Is there a way to turn off the autodisplay of photo links? when I get a tweet with one, it shows, nd then doesn’t go away unless I click it off. Frankly, that’s kind of annoying – if I want to see the photo I want to choose to see it, not autodisplay.

Under Preferences->Appearance there is a checkbox for Show image previews. For future reference hitting escape or scrolling will also make the image preview go away.
